ANCHORAGES

One of the great joys of owning a well found yacht, is the independence gained by the ability to slip away from crowds & take advantage of the tapestry of nature that surrounds us when we are aboard.

Perhaps no other activity afloat defines the freedom we can enjoy more clearly than finding a secure anchorage and spending time there with your yacht, and with good friends.

It follows then, that our association should identify those special places to anchor within our local sailing area, so that members can go there & take advantage of the very best (& free) spots that Western Lake Erie & Lake St Clair has to offer.

We remind those who decide to visit the anchorages listed below, to consult charts (and informed local boaters) for exact locations & that good seamanship and caution should be exercised to determine that the location where you have decided to anchor is an acceptable choice, given the conditions during your stay.

Lake Erie Anchorages

Put In Bay - Anchoring is permitted in front of the Perry Monument, however, as holding can be poor, and shoddy anchoring practices are all too common, we reccomend the use of mooring balls for protection from the elements and those who anchor without concern for others.

Kelley's Island - Anchor at the North of the island, given that conditions are favorable. The West coast of Kelley's, SE of the quarry can also be used for anchoring if conditions permit.

Middle Bass Island - School House Bay, the cove just to the South of the NE penninsula on the eastern side of the island, has a sandy bottom good for anchoring excepting during easterly and southeasterly winds and seas.

Pelee Island - Anchor at the North of the Island, West of the Scudder Marina given that conditions are favorable. It is also possible to anchor at Pelee's southern point, givern favorable conditions.

Catawba Island (East Harbor) - Anchor behind the breadwalls in 7 to 10 ft water depth. this area is well-protected and seldom used. Not recommended for boats drawing more than 5 feet or in low-water conditions.

Lake St. Clair Anchorages

Peche Island - Anchor along the Southern shore of the Island, abeam the Windsor Yacht Club.

Metro Beach - Anchoring is permitted in the Northern basin, however, ( for convienience) we recommend securing your yacht to the channel wall just East of the dockmaster's building, given the low cost of only (approx.) $5 per night.

Thames River (Jenette's Creek) - Proceed along the Thames River until you pass by the first bend after Lucan's Marina.

Further up the Thames, (free) dockage is available at the foot of the steel bridge if you have the ambition to follow the river all the way into Chatham.
