Unfortunately, the distance involved & the time required to make the trip, along with having to go through the Welland Canal, worked against us and (although we had a wonderful time) participating yachts were fewer than expected. In 2003, the BOLT format was changed to a less demanding sail to the ports & islands in western Lake Erie, with the flotilla attending the Beneteau Rendezvous in Vermilion at week's end, and participation was increased over the prior year. Due to thoughts that the BOLT was now well established, for 2004 we attempted a return to a bold format, with the flotilla scheduled to sail to Lake Ontario, Lake Erie & then Lake St Clair, and we were pleased at having been able to coordinate the efforts of our three area dealers by setting up the Rendezvous one weekend after the next, in succession. Regretfully, due to lax attendance the east-bound leg of the BOLT 2004 to Lake Ontario was canceled, and we now realize a shorter localized format will bring about a better response, since many have difficulty breaking away from land based commitments for extended periods of time. In consideration of the above & for the foreseeable future, the BOLT flotilla will be split into a two-week sailing program, taking the group on a Canadian tour during the week prior to, as well as an American tour during the week after, our area Beneteau Owners Rally. Since this will allow for a lengthy program for those that have the time, as well as a shorter (one week or even a weekend) schedule for those who have commitments ashore, we are hopeful that more yachts will be able to join the flotilla as a result. By implementing a shorter localized format, in addition to attending our area Beneteau Owner's Rendezvous, we are confident that the opportunities of sailing & fellowship offered through the BOLT will have a strong appeal to area Beneteau sailors & participation with the flotilla will continue to be a popular event each summer. |
